Rainstorm Kills 1, Destroys 100 Houses In Sokoto

One person died while more than 100 houses were destroyed when rainstorm swept through 15 villages in Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Alhaji Abdullahi Haruna, the Council Chairman told newsmen on Sunday in Illela.

Haruna said seven other persons, including a mother and her three children, sustained various degrees of injuries during the rainstorm which happened on Friday. He also added that six out of the injured persons had been discharged from hospital after treatment.

According to him, the local government council secretariat, schools and other public places are among the buildings destroyed by the storm.


He added that “the strong wind and heavy rain started around 5 p.m. on Friday and lasted for 30 minutes, but the damage it caused was enormous.

“So far, we have been able to identify more than 100 houses destroyed by the rainstorm. “A committee has been set up to assess the extent of the damage.”

The chairman attributed the extent of the destruction on the use of substandard building materials for building in the area.

He, therefore, directed the Works Department of the local government to ensure that people complied with the standard building regulations forthwith.

He said the council had contacted the State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency for assistance to the victims.

According to him, responses of the two agencies have been satisfactory.

“On our part, we are waiting for the report of the committee before deciding on what to do for the victims,’’ Abdullahi said.

The Head of Sokoto Zonal Operations of NEMA, Mr Suleiman Muhammad, disclosed that the agency had been notified about the disaster.

“The agency will soon dispatch a technical team to assess the situation before deciding on the type of relief materials to donate to the victims,’’ Muhammad said.

Vanguard reports that Rev. (Dr.) Mercy Ezekiel, the National Coordinator of Christian Pentecostal Mission (CPM), Pastor Wale Oke and the General Overseer of the Thronegrace Mission, Pastor Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, were also present at the meeting.

They also called for immediate reversal of the revised Basic Education Curriculum, insisting that Christian Religious Studies (CRS) should stand on its own and not be part of an omnibus subject known as Religion and National Values.

Egyptian Television Station suspends Eight Female Presenters ‘For Being Overweight’

Egypt’s state broadcaster has suspended eight female television presenters because it says they are overweight. The Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) gave the women one month to lose weight and said they could return to work when they had an “appropriate appearance”, local media reported.

Only female anchors were removed from their posts, leading women’s rights groups to condemn the move as sexist. The Women’s Centre for Guidance and Legal Awareness said suspending the women on the basis of their weight “violates the constitution” and was a form of violence against women. In a Facebook post, the organisation called on the ERTU to apologise and reverse the decision.

The ERTU told local media the decision would not be reversed, but that the women would continue to be paid while they were suspended. Khadija Khattab, one of the presenters told to go on a diet, told Saudi newspaper Al Watan that the situation was humiliating and scandalous.

She said she wanted people to watch her most recent TV appearances and judge if she was fat, and whether she deserved to be prevented from working.

Another presenter told local media the situation had upset her family and should have been dealt with internally, without the public finding out. Safaa Hegazy, a former news anchor, was appointed head of the ERTU in April and vowed to overhaul the state broadcaster, which is perceived as dowdy and has struggled to compete with international satellite channels that
employ younger hosts.

Egyptian media commentators were split on whether or not the suspensions were a good idea.Fatma al-Sharawi, a journalist at a state-owned newspaper, said she thought the policy ought to be applied to all local TV stations and the BBC reported that one female Twitter user described Ms Hegazy as a “strong woman” for making the decision. But women’s rights group disagree.
“Judging anybody on the basis of his or her body weight is not the right criterion,” said Eman Beibers, chairwoman of the Cairo-based
Association for the Development and Enhancement of Women.
“Our problem is that we judge people by appearance rather than performance and content. I’d have appreciated the suspension decision if those presenters were suspended
because they did their job badly or appeared with excessive make-up.
“It does not matter if the presenter is fat or thin as long as he or she does not use nasty words on the air and knows well how to deal with
guests,” Ms Beibers told Gulf News.
“We have Oprah Winfrey as a successful example,” she said, referring to the famous American talk show host.

This Man Posioned His Neighbour’s Pot Of Soup With Insecticide In Lagos

A man has been arrested after he allegedly putting insecticide in his neighbor's pot of soup. Gordon Daniel, a resident of Ajegunle was accused by the neighbour, Mrs. Saidat Shakiru of putting insecticide in a pot of soup she was cooking on
Tuesday.

It was gathered the woman had left her soup pot on the fire to attend to another issue only to return and discover that the soup reeked of sniper, a poisonous liquid insecticide. The woman was said to have accused Daniel who was the only resident of the compound at home when she was cooking.

She was said to have alerted the landlady who resides on the topmost floor of the storey building as well as her husband who was at work before the matter was reported to the Baale of Aiyetoro street, Saheed Fakunle.

According to a resident:“Sadiat and the suspect were at home when she
was cooking the soup. The woman allegedly went outside to buy something and before she came back Daniel had doused sniper into the soup she was cooking.
“When the woman opened the soup pot she perceived an offensive odour from the soup and she sensed foul play. The angry woman drew the
attention of the landlady to what she had observed.
“Her landlady asked whom she suspected. Since there was nobody at home, she accused Daniel of the deed. When her husband, Shakiru returned from work, she explained her predicament about the soup she was cooking and the matter was moved to the Baale.
“After carrying out investigation, the Baale handed over the suspect to the police alongside the pot of soup.”
The Nation gathered that the suspect, who blamed his actions on the devil, said he was angry because the woman usually insulted him over electric bill.
“The woman has been insulting me over electricity bill.I don’t know what got over me so I decided to put sniper inside their soup to punish her. I am sorry. I regret what I have done.She insulted me so much because of the electricity bill if not I don’t have any problem with her and her husband,” he said.

The owner of the house, Taiye Aroyewun frowned at the suspect’s action, calling him a madman. He said: “The man must be a madman to have attempted to wipe out an entire family. Now that he has been caught, he’s pleading and trying everything possible to settle the matter. Everybody refused because he is a wicked man who committed a
wicked act. If I forgive him today, supposing he chops my head off tomorrow what would happen?”

Scientists Claims Cockroach "Milk" Is Rich In Protein, Fat & Sugar

Scientists have claimed cockroach milk is full of protein, and may someday be transformed into a food supplement worthy of human consumption.

According to CNN, scientists have found that the Cockroach feeds its bug babies a formula which is remarkably rich in protein, fat and sugar.

"The protein crystals are milk for the cockroach infant. It is important for its growth and development,"said Leonard Chavas, one ofthe scientists behind the research.

Fear grips Residents In Bayelsa And Rivers Over Earth Tremor

A suspected earth tremor in parts of Bayelsa and Rivers States has caused palpable apprehension among residents of the affected communities in the two oil-rich states.

Residents of the areas noted that the tremor caused serious cracks on the walls of their buildings due to the incident, though no injury was reported.

It was learnt that in some of the impacted communities such as Igbogene and Akenfa in Bayelsa as well as Akinima, Akie-Oniso (Oruama), One Man Country and Mbiama –neighbouring communities in Rivers, many people who experienced it were yet to recover from the trauma.

There were heavy vibrations that lasted for some minutes during the incident which was said to have started about 12 midnight. Nigeria reportedly experienced tremors in 1933,1939, 1964, 1984, 1990, 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2009 in variousparts of the country.

A retired Principal and landlord in Igbogene, Bayelsa state,Chief Etekpe Friday, described the experience as “frightening”.“We were about to go to bed when I heard a heavy vibration. I thought it was something else so I quickly went into prayers,” the 60-year-old man stated.

Another resident, Victor Idieto, described the earth tremor as a kind of earthquake. He said, “in fact, there was a kind of earthquake, very serious quake that lasted for some minutes. “At first, I thought it was armed robbers that were removing my roof, so I started shouting,‘Armed robbers, armed robbers’, only to realize that others had similar experience.”

At Akie-Oniso (Oruama) in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, a resident, Paul Kio, said the tremor caused a serious crack in his building. “This vibration was something unpredictable, look at the cracks on my wall,” Kio explained.

Also, Paul Harrison, who hails from Delta State, but resides in the area, said it was the fourth time the incident had taken place, vowing to
take his family away from the community if another occurs.

The story was the same at Akinima,
headquarters of the LGA. A house wife, Animason Emeka-Mark, pointed out that she had a traumatic feeling throughout the fateful night. “Everywhere was shaking. It was something else. I thought the world had come to an end,” she said.

Gunmen Abduct RCCG Pastor During Sunday Service

There was panic at a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God at Santos bus stop in the Isawo, Ikorodu, Lagos State,on Sunday after
some gunmen walked in and abducted the pastor during the service.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the pastor, identified only as Bajomo, was whisked away by the gunmen, who came to the church as if they were new members.

Our correspondent learnt that the pastor, who was abducted around 7am,was the first to reach the parish and was preparing for a workers’
meeting which usually preceded the Sunday service.It was gathered that when the other members arrived at the church, the pastor was nowhere to be found.

Our correspondent gathered that the matter was reported at theOwutu Police Division. A witness, who identified herself only as Esther, said the gunmen wore attractive clothes as if they had come for the church service. She said, “The pastor came earlier around 7am to prepare for a workers’ meeting.The shocking thing was that the men walked in quietly like new members.

“They dressed like people who had come to church.They had Bibles with them. They did not shoot or display any weapon. It was when they got to the pastor that they brought out their
guns and ordered him to come with them.

“The pastor got to the church before anyone else and only three members had arrived beforebthe abduction.
“We discovered after they had left that they were Ijaw militants. They have taken away our pastor. Some members, after the incident, went to the pastor’s house to inform his family members.

“It is a sad occurrence in our area that residents are being abducted, raped, assaulted and even killed every day. It is a problem that has been left to become a calamity. “I think the state government and the police really need to do something about these recurring incidents. We are at the mercy of the Ijaw boys.

"The RCCG Head, Media and Public Relations, Pastor Segun Adegbiji, confirmed the abduction. He said the church would invite God’s anger on
those who troubled its members and pastors. He said, “RCCG will not take abduction or murder of our pastors and members any more. “We like to warn murderers and abductors that God will show upwith anger and fire. He will consume them speedily.”
