INEC Offers Employment to Former Youth Corper Who Went Blind While Working During 2011 Elections

The Independent National Election
Commission, INEC, has presented a letter of employment to an ex-corps member, Daniel Oluwatobi, who lost his sight during the 2011 general election.

Presenting the letter to the former youth corps member at the headquarters of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Abuja yesterday, INEC chairman, Prof MahmoodYakubu noted that insecurity has been on the increase during elections in the country.

Prof Yakubu however stated that INEC, along with NYSC and other security agencies are working hard to ensure the security of lives and property during elections.

“After the sad event of 2011, INEC
extended election insurance to all ad-hoc staff, including the youth corps members. The greatest challenge facing election is insecurity. Unfortunately, insecurity has been on the increase during elections. We are working hard with the NYSC and other security agencies to provide security.

It is therefore my pleasure to hand over this new brand of letter of employment to our brand new DG of NYSC so that it will be presented to a brand new staff (Oluwatobi) of INEC,” he said.

Recall that Daniel Oluwatobi, who served in Yobe State between 2010 and 2011, lost his sight due to injuries sustained while participating as an ad-hoc staff in the 2011 general elections.

Responding the director- general of NYSC, Brigadier-General SuleKazaure called for a review of engagement between the NYSC
and INEC.

According to him, “ There is the need for us to review our engagement with the INEC in the following areas; security of corps members during and after elections should be considered, transport on election day should be looked into, the election allowances should be reviewed, there is also need to review the insurance cover for corps
members on election duty .”
